If you walked into a Sunday afternoon sports camp where 5-year-olds are dribbling soccer balls one minute, racing through an obstacle course the next, and pausing mid-session to talk about kindness and fair play, you might think it’s a new kind of summer program. But this is exactly what Play It Forward NE is doing, year-round, in Omaha!!
A Program with Purpose
Play It Forward is a nonprofit youth sports organization that goes beyond drills and games. Its mission: to give young athletes exposure to multiple sports while cultivating character, leadership, and community. What sets the organization apart is its coaching model: high school student-athletes lead the sessions, not as instructors but as mentors and role models.
These teen leaders are nominated by their high schools for outstanding performance, not only on the field but in leadership and academics. Their task is more than teaching sports skills, they guide “Be Kind Time,” lead agility and coordination drills, and help younger kids see the human side of competition.
Programs That Work for Every Kid
Play It Forward offers two parallel tracks:
All-Sports Camp (PreK–2nd Grade): Held 1 day a week for an hour
Sensory-Friendly Camp (Kindergarten–5th Grade): Same timeframe and designed for children who benefit from a more accommodating environment.
☆In each session, children try short introductions to multiple sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc.), practice drills, and play fun games to reinforce those skills. Then comes the obstacle course or agility challenge, ladder drills, cones, hurdles, all designed to help kids move better, explore, and feel confident in their bodies.
☆Importantly, every session includes a “Be Kind Time” segment. Here, the high school leaders pause the physical activity and talk with the kids about being good teammates, respecting differences, handling winning and losing, and including others.
☆For children who need extra support, Play It Forward will pair them with a “buddy,” a high school athlete assigned to help them through the session. This helps ensure that everyone who wants to participate can do so.
Why It Matters
Beyond the fun and fitness benefits, Play It Forward’s approach taps into a deeper purpose.
By pairing younger children with teen role models, the program also strengthens community ties. The older kids get leadership experience; younger kids get someone they can look up to. It builds intergenerational connection in a way that benefits both sides.
Be a Part of It
Whether you have a child who might benefit, a high school student looking for meaningful leadership opportunities, or a business or individual wanting to support community youth... there’s a place for you!

Final Thought
In a world where kids are often siloed into one sport or overwhelmed with competition, Play It Forward NE offers a breath of fresh air. It’s not just about who wins or scores, it’s about learning movement, connection, kindness, and leadership. It’s about playing forward.
