Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt

Find Your Family Fun While Practicing Social Distancing

By Jennifer Ross March 25, 2020

Recently my neighborhood took part in the Shamrock Hunt I saw show up on many different Facebook pages and websites. My kids had an absolute blast and it made me think about how we could do more.  I liked the idea of the hunt but saw that my kids might get bored of it after a couple of times. So my kids and I sat down and brainstormed an "epic" ongoing Scavenger Hunt, using a Facebook group to keep everything organized.  I originally planned on using it for just my neighborhood, but saw other families wanting more scavenger hunts too, so I decided to open up the Facebook group to anyone who wants to use the materials I create, in their own neighborhood.

How It Works:

1. Every few days there is a different theme. Current ones include Jungle Animal, Out of This World, Lego, and more!

2. Prior to each theme, a BINGO card is released with not just one option (like the shamrocks) but 24 options from the theme. This creates an even greater game of searching. Families can search just for a BINGO or to find the entire list.

3. Participating families can choose one or more options from the BINGO card to create and place in their window during the theme's given dates. I have created a Pinterest Board where I curate corresponding crafts for each theme, to help you out!  There are also coloring page options on the board as well.

4. For those families wanting to take things even further I have also curated Educational Boards on Pinterest for each theme as well. The boards include kid-friendly YouTube videos about the theme and kid-friendly websites.

5. Because my kiddos hop around like crazy people all day, we also included STAR STOPS and PECULIAR PATHWAYS.

  • STAR STOPS are a place to list some sort of exercise for the hunters to do, while at your house. The possibilities are endless! You can use the printable found on the group's Facebook page or make your own.
    • Here are some examples to help you get going: push-ups, burpees, bear crawl, crab walk, jumping jacks, cartwheel, somersault, tree pose, flamingo pose, cobra pose, touch your toes, side stretches, dance (cha-cha, thriller, electric slide, cupid shuffle, hokey pokey, ring around the rosie, macarena, floss & hype...)
  • PECULIAR PATHWAYS are fun ways to walk as hunters pass by. Maybe you have a hop-scotch, or a zig-zag line, or a spiral... again, the possibilities are endless!

6. Check out the Facebook page to see all the fun first hand and to start the fun in your own neighborhood! Our neighborhood has its own Facebook page, so I used that initially to connect with everyone and would recommend using yours if you have one too. The Nextdoor app might also be a helpful option. On the Facebook page you can also find a poll I created to help locate which neighborhoods are participating already. Check out the fun here by clicking below!
